Question 1: Numeracy

A business invests $80,000 in a term deposit at an annual interest rate of 5%, compounded annually.

The formula for compound interest is:

A = P(1 + r)n

Where A = final amount, P = principal, r = annual interest rate as a decimal (e.g. 5% = 0.05), n = number of years.

After 2 years, the business withdraws the full amount. They originally invested $80,000.

Question 2: Numeracy — Data Interpretation

A marketing manager is reviewing staff productivity. The table below shows the number of client proposals completed per staff member over two quarters.

Staff Member Q1 Proposals Q2 Proposals % Change
Angela 20 25 +25%
Ben 30 24 -20%
Carmen 15 15 0%
David 10 14 +40%

The manager also notes that the team target for Q2 was 20 proposals per person. Staff who exceeded the target received a performance bonus.

Question 3: Reading — Critical Analysis

Read the two extracts below about the use of artificial intelligence in the workplace.

Extract A — Industry Report (TechForward Consulting, 2024)

“Organisations that have integrated AI-assisted tools into their operations report an average productivity increase of 34%. AI enables workers to focus on higher-value tasks by automating routine processes, reducing error rates, and providing real-time data analysis. Companies that delay AI adoption risk falling behind competitors who are already leveraging these efficiencies.”

Extract B — Academic Journal (Journal of Workplace Studies, 2024)

“While AI tools can improve certain operational metrics, the evidence for widespread productivity gains remains mixed. Studies examining AI implementation across diverse industries show that outcomes depend heavily on workforce training, organisational culture, and the specific nature of tasks being automated. Furthermore, the productivity figures cited by consulting firms often reflect best-case scenarios from early adopters rather than average outcomes across all sectors.”

Question 4: Reading — Copyright

Copyright applies automatically as soon as an idea is expressed in a material form — written down or recorded in some form, such as a book, music recording, or website. It exists in both published and unpublished material as well as in electronic material.

Under fair dealing, the copyright in a work is not infringed if the dealing is fair and for the purposes of:

  • research and study
  • criticism or review
  • parody or satire
  • reporting news
  • a judicial proceeding or report of a judicial proceeding

Question 5: Writing — Grammar

Read the following workplace conversation carefully. One of the underlined phrases contains a grammatical error.

Daisy: “You’re dropping Jane off at work tomorrow. You know where she works, right?”

Peter: “I think that I have the address stored in my phone somewhere. I just need to figure out what is the best time to leave so we get her there on time.”

Daisy: “I know that I usually try to head off by about 4pm, but you should probably leave a bit earlier if you’ve never been there before.”

Question 6: Writing — Punctuation

The sentence below has one comma that is used incorrectly.

As the season progressed, it became clear that the original target of completing the project before the end of the financial year, was overly optimistic, and a revised, more realistic timeline would need to be agreed upon.

Identify after which word the incorrect comma appears.

Question 7: Reading — Academic Reference

Look at the following academic reference and identify what type of source is being cited.

KOTLER, P., & KELLER, K. L. (2009). Marketing management. Upper Saddle River, N.J., Pearson Prentice Hall.

Question 8: Learning — Process Sequencing

When hiring employees there are several steps that should be taken. The seven steps below are listed in the wrong order.

  1. Interview your top candidates
  2. Post the job online using platforms such as Seek and Indeed
  3. Choose the candidate you think would be the best fit
  4. Contact the candidate and make an offer of employment
  5. Conduct onboarding process for the new employee (tour, email login information, HR forms)
  6. Create a job title and job description
  7. Review applicant resumes

Choose the option that places these steps in the correct order from first (1) to last (7).

Question 9: Reading — Comprehension

Read the following article about recent technologies and answer the question below.

Technology plays an important role in every aspect of our lives and can be a very useful tool in terms of making our work lives easier and more efficient; however, some believe that technology may in fact replace us in the workplace altogether.

An example of this is the growing use of tablet computers in restaurants all over the world. Whether at their table or in designated areas, customers are able to use self-service screens to select their meals in the same way that they make online purchases. Waitstaff are still needed in some capacity, but many tasks that were previously performed by humans are now automated.

Since 2010, tech companies have been developing self-driving cars, which use a combination of motion sensors, GPS, and software to navigate roads and traffic. Driverless cars have already been made legal in the US state of Nevada. Although some safety concerns remain, the technology is advancing rapidly.

Because of these new technologies and trends, it is very likely that many jobs will cease to exist in the future. For this reason, it is very important for people of all ages in the workforce, especially the youth, to keep up-to-date with emerging technologies and not fear them. People who embrace technology and learn to work alongside it will have a significant advantage over those who do not.
